Beirut massacre

Sir, — It was with much relief that I read today (“The Press,” page 11) of the impending return to Israel of its retiring /ambassador, Mr Yaakov Morris. Your report states that he is “scathing about what he calls the hypocrisy behind the moral outrage of the West over the Beirut massacre.” If Mr Morrises five years of laying a smokescreen over Israel’s real rather than apparent intentions in the Middle East, plus his efforts at stifling criticism by New Zealanders with less of a vested interest, had been less effective, the world reaction at this latest outrage might not have come as such a "surprise” to the hardened Zionist. As the representative of a country with more racial-orientated laws (no right of return for non-Jews, pass laws, "Bantustans” for the Arabs, etc.) than South Africa, and one which increasingly exhibits a Nazi Germany-like attitude to internal and external power and expansionism, I think Mr Morris has one hell of a cheek. — Yours, etc.,

R. L. MORGAN. September 24, 1982.
