Beirut massacre
Sir" — Congratulations to “The Press” for its uncompromising coverage of the terrible killings; However, your recent' editorial on the subject concluded that the truth surrounding the massacre would never be known. Since several hundred militia plus Israeli military (who. guided' them with flares) were privy to the event, an independent inquiry would surely uncover the truth. Regarding Mike Roy ko’s story (page 6, “The Press,” Friday), his" description of Ariel Sharon as . Menachim Begin’s “righthand brute” was priceless. But mapy questions of readers could still be answered by your newspaper. What does Royko mean about Begin planning “the slaughter, of an entire Palestinian village”? And why has the Vatican never recognised Israel? Now that Mr Yaakov Morris is leaving us, the New Zealand media will feel less inhibited in allowing some of the truths .of the Middle East to surface. —
Yours, etc., ' A. L. BRINLEY. September 24, 1982.
