China has billion people
NZPA Peking .Vice-Prime Minister Wan Li says China now has more than one billion people. Japanese sources have reported. Wan told the Japanese Agriculture Minister. Kichiro Tazawa. that the exact figure was 1.076 billion and was the result of the July 1 official national census, the sources said.
He did not disclose further census information. Initial census data is expected to be released in late September. The census figure he gave covers the mainland and does not include Taiwan, the Japanese sources said. China listed a population of 996.2 million people based on household registrations at the end of 1981. In the last census in 1964 China counted 723.070.296 people. ' The only other census, in 1953. showed 601.930.035. For the latest census. Chinese officials say they will accept the 18 million figure for Taiwan given by the ruling Nationalists.
