Car industry plan rejected
PA Wellington The Industries Development Commission's plan for the automotive industry has been rejected by the Automotive Component Manufacturers' Federation. The president. Mr R. A. Sebelin, said that the plan had been considered by the federation’s council at a meeting, and it was unanimously agreed that if implemented it would result in the contraction of the industry and there would be substantial lay-offs. He said: "From our point of view there are very few positive aspects in the plan which are greatly
outweighed by the negative. Our main concern is the proposal to eliminate the mandatory deletion system which is necessary to maintain employment in the automotive component industry. We believe the I.D.C.’s proposals in this area are totally unworkable." Mr Sebelin said that the federation “is adamant that the deadline for submissions of October 29 is totally unrealistic and must be changed. “The I.D.C. report is over 300 pages long. Many of the proposals are extremely complex and it will be several months before we are in
a position to present our detailed submission. "Accordingly we have asked the I.D.C. for an extension to December 17 of this year." Mr Sebelin said that the automotive industry was of enormous importance to the whole of the New Zealand economy. “It is therefore absolutely essential that the industry study should not be rushed and we would expect that the I.D.C, will agree with our »suggested time-table,” he .. said.
