Man dies when car plunges into sea
One of the last New Zealand whalers died when his car plunged into Picton Harbour about 11 p.m. on Saturday. He was
Trevor John Norton, aged 60. of 114 Waikawa Road. Picton.
Mr Norton, who began whaling at the age of 14. was said to have been the greatest whaling gunner the Perano whalers of Tory Channel ever knew.
In 27 years of whaling. Mr Norton killed 1400 whales, including the last whale to be gunned in New Zealand. This was on December 21. 1964. off the Kaikoura coast. With Mr Gil Perano. who died last year. Mr Norton was the main source of information for the book on the Perano whalers, written by Don Grady. The Norton family arrived in New Zealand in 1793. before any established settlement by Europeans. Members of the family engaged in whaling for 130 years. Mr Norton was brought up in the small Marlborough town of Te Awaiti. on Tory Channel.
