Teachers sought by V.S.A.
PA Wellington Volunteer Service Abroad is seeking primary and secondary teachers to fill Pacific posts next year. The selection co-brdinator. Ms Jennifer Calvert, said that V.S.A. was hoping for a good response from teachers, because for the last three years it had not been able to meet the demand from the Pacific countries. “We particularly need science and mathematics secondary teachers for examination level classes in the central Pacific, including the Cook Islands. Western Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji.” she said. Teachers of other subjects in demand include English, accountancy, and geography. Primary teacher vacancies exist in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Ms Calvert said Pacific countries liked New Zealand teachers because most of the schools followed the same curriculum as New Zealand schools. “They are also usually experienced in teaching some Pacific Island pupils." V.S.A. has about 40 Pacific teaching posts to fill, all of them two-year terms.
