Otago stays in first division
PA Dunedin David Halligan scored 26 points as Otago beat Bay of Plenty. 30-4. to ensure its retention of first division rugby status at Carisbrook on Saturday. Halligan notched two tries and six penalty goals in Otago's biggest win since the championship began in 1976. Otago, playing with the advantage of a stiff breeze, led 10-0 at half time. It capitalised on this advantage when Halligan scored the first of his tries three minutes into the second
half and from then on was never in danger of defeat. Otago gained advantage in the line-outs through Andy Hollander. Gary Seear. and Andrew Thomas, and the Otago forwards rucked and drove in a manner they had not previously managed this season. Bay of Plenty now faces a promotion-relegation match expected to be played next month. Scores: Otago 30 (Halligan (2). Rob Taylor, tries. Halligan six penalty goals): Bay of Plenty 4 (Frank Shelford try).
