Award to tavern conversion
PA Wellington This year's national award of the Institute of Architects has gone to Athfield Architects for the Greta Point Tavern, a recycled warehouse complex overlooking Evans Bay in Wellington Harbour.
The original two-storey warehouse was built at the turn of the century by the Union Steam Ship Company for the servicing of ships. It remained in use until about 20 years ago when it was left to become derelict.
In 1978, Mainzeal Corporation approached the architect, Mr lan Athfield, for design proposals to convert it to a tavern.
"Greta Point Tavern expresses its industrial and maritime heritage in the bold use of structural steel and timber, a lot of which has been preserved or reused in the tavern,” the institute said.
