TV advertisement
Sir,—There has been a lot of discussion lately on censorship of films, but I wish to complain about a TV advertisement on Channel One late in the even-
ings. It shows puppet figures of parents fighting and arguing and a child constantly screaming. The high-pitched noise is nerve-shattering — then silence; the puppet child falls to the floor. The fractured head falls apart before the eyes of real children who are horrified and stunned into tearful silence. This advertisement is supposed to promote a book which has been published for the Plunket Society called “A Cry for Help” which is about child abuse. The book offers help. encouragement and understanding for parents under increasing stressful situations. I feel the effect of the advertisement on very tired, desperate and emotional parents at the end of a busy day is enough to intensify their problems. The crying baby in the next room could perhaps become the next victim of child abuse. The booklet is very good. The advertisement leaves me cold.—Yours, etc., JUNE CUNNEEN. September 15. 1982.
