Repair of church

Sir,—lt is good to hear that the Christchurch City Council is considering making a grant for essential repairs to the Church of the Good Shepherd, Phillipstown. The church is rich in history. Its second vicar, the Rev. H. J. C. Gilbert, was the first Anglican priest to wear eucharist vestments in the diocese of Christchurch, perhaps the first in New Zealand. The architect, Benjamin Mountfort, designed the church he was to worship in all his days, and he was responsible for this being the first Anglican church in Christchurch to adopt a Catholic style of worship. Sister Edith, the founder of the Community of the Sacred Name, was the first Phillipstown parish worker. Te Waipounamu College . was moved to Christchurch in 1920 because the fourth vicar of Phillipstown, the Rev. C. A. Fraer, brought it with him from his previous parish of Tuahiwi and Ohoka. This church deserves the support of the council.—Yours, etc..
