Japanese tourists
Sir,—lt was pleasing to read the report of Mr Black's study tour to Japan (“The Press," September 16). This is the way for New Zealanders to find out how we can cater for tourism in this country. Mr Black gives the Japanese 100 per cent “for effort" — I would venture to suggest that they also deserve 100 per cent for success in their tourist industry. The most important aspect of Mr Black's report was that in Japan there are English-speaking Japanese employed right throughout the tourist industry, especially in the hotel trade. I look forward to the time when New Zealand hotels catering for Japanese tourists wake up to a similar revelation and start employing Japanese-speaking New Zealanders and training them in the hotel industry. Many experiences over the last few years would suggest that there is no better place to start than in Christchurch.—Yours, etc., ALASTAIR MCLAUCHLAN. Tutor in Japanese, Christchurch Polytechnic.
