New wheelchair
Rehabilitation engineers at the University of Virginia Medical Centre have designed a new wheelchair that may be used at the beach or on the trail. The versatile, all-terrain chair was designed at the university’s rehabilitation engineering centre, one of 16 centres in the country financed by the National Institute of Handicapped Research. In tests the chair proved its ability to float, move through soft beach sand, over river stone, and be pulled up 15cm steps.—Charlottesville,
