Gilchrist’s victory
NZPA Adelaide The Canterbury miler. Michael Gilchrist, won the men's 1500 metres in the good time of 3min 42sec at the Hindmarsh Quest for Gold meeting in Adelaide on Saturday. He beat the Australian ’ 800 m champion, Peter Bourke, with another Australian, Paul Grinstead, third. New Zealand men won three of the field events at the meeting, while Jenny Overall took the women’s 1500 m in 4min 27.75ec.
Nineteen members of New Zealand’s Brisbane Commonwealth Games athletics team took part in the meeting. Field event victories went to Mike O’Rourke (javelin, 82m). M. Robinson (discus, 51.18 m) and Terry Lomax (Canterbury), high jump, 2.14 m). The Canterbury steeplechaser, Peter Renner, finished second to New South Wales's John Andrews, who won the 3000 m in Bmin B.2Bsec. Renner's time was 8:11.53.
