Golf charity chosen

The organisers of the Christchurch Garden City Golf Classic, the Round Table and the Lions Club of Canterbury, have chosen Barnardo’s as their charity this year. Proceeds from this year's golf tournament, sponsored by “The Press.’’ will be used to provide Barnardo’s with a mini van, which will be based at Barnardo’s new centre in Richmond. The vehicle will be used at all eight Family Daycare Centres throughout the city to assist families with transport to and from playgroups and with outings, as well as the transportation of cots, furniture and equipment to homes. The organisers are hoping that the full cost of the vehicle will be raised through the event, which

will be played at Harewood on November 20 and 21. The tournament will be the sixth since the Garden City Classic replaced the professional event at Russley. In previous years, funds have been used to buy the “jaws of life” equipment, a defibrillator for the Heart Unit, a surf rescue boat, a neo-natal monitor, electronic scales and a Viewscan for the Christchurch Hospital. There will be at least 30 prize-winning places for the team aggregate stableford competition and it is expected that more than 400 players will compete on the two Harewood courses over the two days. Entries are invited from teams and individuals. The entry fee is $25 and entries close on November 15.
