Minifie’s golf selection

Paul Minifie was unable to

command a place in the top eight for his club, Waitikiri. in the opening round of the Woodward Cup. but the Canterbury selectors obviously view his talents in a different light. The Waitikiri junior has gained the last place in the Canterbury eight-man team to play Otago in the inaugural representative match between the two provinces at Coringa on September 18 and 19. The competition comes at an opportune time for Can-

terbury’s leading golfers as they prepare for the South Island inter-provincial teams' event in October and the Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament the next month. After Canterbury's surprise loss to Mid-South Canterbury last month, several of the- Canterbury players have something to prove. Brent Paterson and Geoff Saunders both lost twice in the top four against Mid-South Canterbury. ■ The accomplished Waimairi Beach No. 1, Stephen Greenall. who is unbeaten in his four repre-

sentative appearances this season, has deserved his promotion to No. 6. One player who might have divided loyalties as to the outcome is the Canterbury No. 3 John Sanders. Sanders moved to Christchurch earlier this year after representing Otago in six of the last seven Freyberg tournaments. Sanders, however, is fighting hard to win a place in this year’s Canterbury Freyberg side and success against his former team-mates would consolidate his claims. The team, in playing order, is: John Williamson (captain). Paterson, Sanders. Saunders, Mark Street, Greenall, James Angus, Minifie. Reserves: Peter Heasley, Robert McDonald.
