Paraguayan envoy on smuggling counts
NZPA Bombay Bombay's Chief Magistrate has denied bail to the Paraguayan Ambassador to Taiwan, and ordered that he remain in custody until October 18 on charges of smuggling gold into India. The diplomat, General Timoteo Alvarenga, was jailed two months ago. The Magistrate ordered his continued detention under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act. Cases under this law are not eligible for bail. Mr Alvarenga's lawyers had planned to petition for bail, but the magistrate ruled that General Alvarenga was not entitled to diplomatic immunity because he was not based in India.
