Meeting soon on heart unit
Whether the fight for a Christchurch heart surgery unit will continue, may be decided at a meeting next week. The Cardiac Companions Association will present its case for a unit to the North Canterbury Hospital Board on Monday. The association’s chairman, Mr Paul Milthorpe, said that the group would drop its "passive" approach and present the board with a "more vigorous case." At a meeting last evening, the association reaffirmed that it would fight for the unit. It intends to approach central and local government. other hospital boards affected, and "the whole community." Mr Milthorpe hopes that the association and the board will use all its powers to establish the unit, "if need be. by calling upon the local community to show tangible support.
“Alternatively, it is for the board to come up with other acceptable proposals," he said. •
