Accident causes reported
Most waterfront accidents are caused by careless handling of goods or falling or slipping, said the Ministry of Transport's annual report for the year ended March 31, 1982. During the year 744 cargohandling accidents were reported on the waterfront. Two- of these were fatal, 50 were serious, and the rest were minor and did not cause work to be stopped. High standards are imposed for the inspection and maintenance of cargo-handling gear, resulting in the small number of failures of this equipment. In 1981, the Ministry received 28 reports of great failure and on investigation 13 of these were attributed to misuse or abuse. ♦ ♦ * New Zealand had 1690 ships, with a net tonnage total of 156,162 tons, registered ' on December 31, 1981, the report said. This represented an increase of 96 ships, and nearly 1500 tons, over the year ended December 1980. Most of these registered ships are small fishing vessels and pleasure yachts. But one cargo ship the Totara was added to the register, and another cargo ship the Toa Moana along with the tugs Otago and Lyttelton II were removed from the register.
