«ES3» Mr A. S. Roberts

A former secretary of the Canterbury Driver's Union, Mr Arthur S. Roberts, died last week. He joined the union in 1930, and was elected to the executive in 1942. In 1946. he became vice-president and was made organiser of the union in 1950. Mr Roberts was secretary of the union from 1951 until 1967, when he retired. During that time he was a councillor on the New Zealand Drivers’ Federation and served three years as national vice-presi-dent. He represented New Zealand drivers on a trade union delegation to China in 1955

and in 1966 attended the Conference of Inland Transport at the International Labour Organisation in Geneva. He was a committee member of the Sydenham Labour Party for several years and was a life member of the New Zealand Marching Association and the United Marching Association. Mr Roberts bred, exhibited, and judged Border canaries. He was president of the Caged Birds Society for five years.He was a member of the M.U.1.0.0.F. for more than 40 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
