Bid to solve coal problem
. Neighbours in the area of Maddens and Richards coal yard in Blenheim Road should not have so many pfoblems with coal dust in future. iThe Riccarton Borough Council's Works and Town Hall Committee last evening recommended that the conditions on the licence for the cbal yard be made more stringent to lessen problems of Pollution from the yard. 'Complaints had been received by the council for some years from residents in Mayfair Street about the coal dust.
The conditions imposed on the licence will mean the licensee has to ensure that -all spilt coal is cleaned up immediately, and that all paved areas are swept frequently to prevent a build-up of coal dust. The existing spray system will be extended. By March 31, 1983, all unpaved areas where coal may be stored or transported over or bagged will be paved; and all coal will be stored in orderly piles contained on three sides to stop spreading, and the premises will be protected from wind
by screens or other suitable material. Rubbish Special rubbish collections will be held in the borough on October 11 and 15. Cr R. S. Lester said that these had been very popular and successful with ratepayers in the past. Walkway The walkway from Riccarton Road to Brockworth Place has been completed and 95 trees, shrubs and flaxes were planted along the edge of the path.
