Riccarton clamps down on video parlours
Changes in the Riccarton EorOugh Council's’ district scheme mean that it will be more difficult to establish video machine parlours and other places of entertain- ' meht. A special meeting of the borough council last evening agreed to alter the district scheme Which makes “places of assembly” and “places of entertainment” conditional uses in certain zones. Previously, places of entertainment and assembly were allowed of right in some zones.
The alterations mean that planning applications to establish entertainment centres will come under close council scrutiny. The change to the district scheme was prompted by an unsuccessful move to establish a fast-food 1 restaurant and video-games parlour at the corner of Riccarton Road and Euston Street. Amendments were also made to the commercial A zone polices and ordinances which change the maximum gross floor area for a tennancy from 750 square
metres to 100 sq m and increase the maximum site coverage from 60 per cent to 70 per cent. Cr D. A. Anderson said that this would limit the size of development of retail outlets and cut down on the
amount of traffic generated. Apprentice The electrical engineer, Mr D. S. Catanach, will investigate ways in which the council’s electricity department’ can employ several apprentices.
