The economy
Sir,-With his usual impeccable timing, our Minister of Finance and Prime Minister is once again out of the country at the time when more bad news of New Zealand’s economic state is made public. I refer, of course, to the record $1927 million current account deficit just announced by the Department of Statistics, and I find it somewhat ironic that our Mr Muldoon is busy overseas telling other nations how to manage their finances when our own country is in such a parlous state. As Tom Scott, the columnist, recently observed, the National Party have now accepted that the only way'to outflank Mr Muldoon is to out-live him, and this tactic could be a long drawnout trauma for New Zealand.— Yours, etc.,
R. L. PLUCK. September 1, 1982.
