Surprise rally entry

Jim Donald, of Auckland, the 1981 national rally champion, is a surprise entry for the Hella Lights rally near Auckland this week-end. The event is the last round of the national championship and Donald had said earlier this year that he would not defend his title. Fellow Aucklander Tony Teesdale has already wrapped up the 1982 series in his Escort RS. but Donald decided to enter his Sanyo Escort RS to see if he can match Teesdale’s pace. Jean-Louis Leyraud. of New Caledonia, will add spice to the field when he starts at No. 4 in an Escort

RS. He drove the car in the Motogard rally in June, and finished seventh, behind Teesdale. Dave Parkes, of Motueka, will start at No. 8 in his Escort 1600 and has an outside chance of taking championship honours in the 1300 to 1600 cu cm class if his closest rivals. Bruce Herbert (Woodville) and Kevin Bremer (Hamilton), strike trouble. The event will start on Saturday afternoon, includes 290 km of high-speed special stages and will finish at 9 a.m. on Sunday. More than 120 drivers will face the starter.
