Mediocre sale for store entries

Store sheep and cattle had an indifferent sale at the Addington market yesterday. Although the competition for prime beef was weak, this class sold well. A short yarding helped the market. Prime lambs were cheaper than last week and some prime sheep were hard to sell: Prime lambs Only small numbers of good butcher-quality lambs were included in the prime lamb offering of 1634 (1228 last week). Most lambs offered were smaller sorts and values for these eased by a good $2. Better lambs were $1 cheaper. The best price for the sale was $33. Values were;— Heavy lambs: to $33. Medium lambs: $22 to $26. Light lambs: $16.40 to $21.50. Sales of prime lambs included— H. L. Pickering (Motunau), 51 at $30.20 to $32.60; A. D. Saunders (Brookside). 15 at

Johnson (Clarkville), 33 at $25.80 to $30.40. Prime sheep Only the best sheep in the yarding of 1694 prime sheep (1600 last week) sold readily. Lighter sheep, especially old ewes, were harder to sell and values for these eased slightly. Hoggets sold reasonably well. Values were:— Best hoggets: to $31.30. Medium hoggets: $22 to $24.60. Light hoggets: $14.80 to $21.30. Best old ewes: to $20.80. Medium old ewes: $13.60 to

Brooker (Loburn), 13 at $26 to $30.60. Prime cattle A yarding of only 97 head and the absence of strong competition created a false market in the prime cattle pens. One local buyer and a freezing works were the main competition at the sale. Quality was surprisingly good, considering the feed difficulties beef fatteners are experiencing. Values were:— Prime heavy steers: to $462. Prime medium steers: $3BO to $452. Prime light steers: $260 to $340.^-,.. v< ., - rw ,. . Prime -heavy, heifers:' t0.,5.370.-' Prime medium heifers: $265 to $319. ->- ; - ■ ' •

Prime light heifers: $2OO tc $255. Prime heavy cows: to $359. Prime medium cows: $250 to $3lO. Prime light cows: $lBO to $232. Vealers Only seven vealers were offered (three last week) and the demand was limited. Heifers had the best of the market, selling mainly between $l6B and $196. Steers sold to $166. Dairy cattle Heifers, with calves, had the best of the dairy cattle sale. The yarding was eight (four last

week). The best price was $345 for a Friesian heifer with calf. Others ranged between $l2O and $340. Store sheep The quality of ewes with lambs at foot, was lower than last week’s sale. Values were depressed slightly for poorerquality sheep but held firm for better types. Store hoggets had a sound sale,' although the quality was very mixed. The best market was for inlamb ewes. Demand from local fatteners was strong and these sold easily. The over-all yarding was 3097. Sales of store sheep included— Ewes and lambs (all counted): L. C. Cherry (East Eyreton). 45 ewes and 47 lambs at $11.50, 48 ewes and 48 lambs at $11.10; J. L. Howson (Sedgemere), 47 ewes and 56 lambs at $11.30; I. D. Ewes: B. R. Jopp (Prices Valley), 100 Perendale two-tooths at $14.20. Store cattle The market for store cattle was similar to last week. The strongest demand was for better quality cattle, especially steers. Lighter sorts were hard to sell. Most 18-month steers exceeded $260. Some medium-quality steer calves sold for $l2O and heifer calves for $7O. Sales of store cattle included— D. W. and 0. J. Calder (Little River). 14 two-year Angus cross steers at $318; A. J. Hutchinson (Wainui). 18 18-month Angus steers at $275 to $280; J. A. and A. A.-Calder (Culverden), 20 18-month Angus steers at $215 to $244. Fat pigs As has been the case in recent weeks, the quality of the fat pig offering was very .poor. Values reflected the quality. Retail buyers only operated on odd lots and the. market had a ‘ (very dull'tone. > . Only a?few choppers were offered and values were strong.

Values were;— Good quality light pork: $BO to $B6. Medium and heavy pork: $9O to $lO5. Light and medium baconers: $llO to $l2O with odd sales to $135. Light choppers: $BO to $lOO. Heavy choppers: $l3O to $l6O.

Store pigs Although the market was very small, almost all the yarding was of good quality. The presence of an outside buyer helped values maintain the high level of recent weeks. Very few large stores were

included and the demand for these was unsatisfactory. Breeding stock had a reasonable sale. In-pig sows sold to $320. Values were:— Small weaners: $37 to $42. Good weaners: $44 to $5O. Slips and small stores: $52 to $62. Large stores: to $7O.
