Canty hockey team in firm control
PA Dunedin A fired-up Canterbury took control from the opening minutes in its game against Otago in the national men’s hockey tournament in Mosgiel yesterday, and ran out a convincing winner, 4-0. . Canterbury scored in the fourth minute when George Carnoutsos converted a penalty stroke, and followed up with a well-taken goal by Balvant Bhana 13 minutes later. The gap widened to three goals 12 minutes into the second spell when Carnoutsos featured again, this time with a brilliant solo goal in which he beat three de-
fenders before wrong-footing the goalkeeper, Maurice Marquet and pushing the ball into the net. A Bruch Riach goal near the end sealed the match. In other games, Manawatu came from behind to beat Hawke’s Bay, 2-1, while in the Newmans Trophy, Hamilton lifted its chances with a 2-1 win over Taranaki. The bottom seed, West Coast, continued its amazing form, beating the 1981 Newmans semi-finalist, Horowhenua. 1-nil. On Monday, it drew 2-all with Hamilton. * In India Plate, Southland
