Local bodies

Sir,—lt is interesting to note conflicting statements in press reports appearing in your issues of August 3 and 4. The president of the Municipal Association suggests that the “poor record” of the Muldoon Government requires the Audi-tor-General to assume greater importance as a public watchdog. In a separate report, the Auditor-General is quoted as saying that his office had identified problems that prevent efficiency in local authorities. Yet one can write to Mr Muldoon and get a personal reply over his signature, but a letter to the Municipal Association from an individual as against a corporate body is liable to receive a rdbuke. I would suggest that the Municipal Association might improve its image by becoming a little less arrogant. — Yours, etc.,

C. W. D. HODGSON August 29, 1982.
