‘Press’ chess to Chch B.H.S.
Christchurch Boys’ High School, unbeaten throughout the A grade of "The Press” chess teams’ tournament, almost stumbled at the last hurdle in the grand final at Shirley B.H.S. last evening. The defending champion, Shirley, did not surrender lightly. With the contest level at 2¥z-2%, Shirley had a chance to win the crucial game, but the Boys’ High captain and No. 2, Edward Wilkinson, saved the situation through his constant attacking play. Mairehau took third prize money when it beat Burnside, 4-2, in the other A grade play-off. Apart from an early win by Mairehau’s David Beattie, the other games were closely fought to the finish.
The B grade championship was shared by Shirley B and Christ’s College B, which drew 3-3, The teams were level, 2%-2t4, with one game requiring adjudication. The adjudicators ruled a draw. ,Heaton Intermediate, for the third time in the last four years, beat its arch-rival, Cobham Intermediate, in the C grade final. The two teams drew, 3-3, in their preliminary round, but Heaton managed an extra half point in the final to win, Results: A GRADE Shirley A C.B.H.SA. 3‘.i B. Cameron drew with B.
