Medical care

Sir,—L. G. Robinson (July 7) disputed F. McGrath's figures ($2OO-$400) for annual medical insurance costs. He says he pays “only $180.96.” Medical insurance brochures I have seen list Southern Cross as $197.92, and other 'schemes: $l5O, $250.20, and $468 for comparable services. Why do we pay medical insurance? Medical insurance appears to have too many limitations. If I want to reap the “bonus benefits,” I certainly must not develop a chronip illness (such as arthritis, a heart condition or multiple sclerosis) for all insurance schemes have exclusion clauses which allow the companies to exclude such claims. If I did develop a chronic condition I would find that the only agencies I can rely on would be the voluntary agencies, and the public health system. I cannot see the point in paying — even “only $180.96 per year.” — Yours, etc.,
