Welsh bowler’s Games ban
NZPA London A Commonwealth Games bronze medallist has been banned from the Welsh team going to Brisbane because he made a trip to South Africa. Russell Evans, who is on the United Nations "black list" of sportsmen who have played in the Republic, won a bronze medal at bowls in 1978 at Edmonton. The “Observer” newspaper yesterday said it was the first time such an action has been taken against an amateur by a British sporting body. It will be announced officially today by the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales executive, the Sunday paper said. Another Welsh bowler who played in South Africa three years ago, Jim Morgan, has been cleared. The Welsh Council’s president, Mr Cyril Howell, said Evans was singled out “because it’s only in the last 18 months to two years that the Gleneagles Agreement has really bitten."
“We can’t go to Australia with'somebody who has this blemish on his character," Mr Howell added, The action against Evans was described by the AntiApartheid Movement as “a welcome hardening of attitude."
