Strong N.Z. ski team
New Zealand will be represented by a small, but strong team of professional skiers at the world Inter-ski congress in Italy next year. Included in the team of seven men and one woman are two former New Zealand Winter Olympic representatives. Chris Womersley (1968. 1972) and Robin Armstrong (1976). The team was announced in Christchurch by the executive director of the New Zealand Ski Instructors Alliance. Mr Scott Callaway, after a telephone conversation with the selector and coach. Mr John Armstrong, from Mammoth Mountain. California. Mr Callaway said that it was a group of highly experienced. outstanding skiers. "Never before have we had
such extensive tryouts for such a team." Inter-ski. the most important international congress of ski-ing nations, is held everv four years and New Zealand will be one of 15 "demonstration teams" making technical presentations at the congress from January 15 to 22. New Zealand was the only Southern Hemisphere country to attend the last Interski event at Zao. Japan, in 1979 and there are five survivors from that team. Mr John Armstrong said that he had selected a smaller team than originally expected "to enable me to present a team of extremely high quality and a demonstration that will continue the growth in the credibility of New Zealand as a ski-ing nation.”
Inter-ski is a proven forum for successful international promotion of New Zealand as a destination for overseas skiers. Considerable business has been generated from Japan after the visit there of the 1979 Inter-ski team. The team will train at Mount Hutt in September and October and later in the United States, before the event starts at Sexten. Italy. Mr Peter Yeoman, chairman of the Mount Hutt Company, is expected to be a member of the delegation. The full team is: John Armstrong (California), coach. Scott .Callaway (Christchurch). Tony Graham (Methven). Russell Thomson (Auckland). Robin Armstrong (Methven). Chris Womersley (Methven). Noel Dufty (Methven). Sue Murray (Tekapoi. Manager: Mr Des Peters (Christchurch).
