Law Centre kept busy

The rent freeze imposed by the Government last month has led to an increased number of inquiries to the Community Law Centre from anxious tenants.

The law centre, located in the Arts Centre, and run by students of the University of Canterbury, opened three months ago. Since then it had started 75 separate files from clients’, inquiries, said the secretary, Miss Carolyn Risk. Many of these inquiries were about tenancy problems, particularly since the rent freeze, said Miss Risk. Other inquiries included family matters, insurance claims and queries about

social weltare benefits, and dealings with other Government departments. Miss Risk said the centre was beginning to become well known. “We are getting several telephone inquiries as well as people coming in," she said. Manyof these persons had been referred to lawyers and other agencies. The Law Centre had amended its hours to.be open when people were most likely to go there, said Miss Risk. The centre is open from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. from Mondays to Thursdays and from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. on Saturdays.
