Greek Meer for Winter Cup
Special correspondent Wellington The five-year-old Greek Meer, earned himself a trip to Riccarton when he won the Members' Handicap at Trentham yesterday. Greek Meer scored by a length from Copper Weave. Athamas was third and the favourite John Wayne fourth.. After the race his .Stratford trainer. Jack Taylor, announced that Greek Meer would attempt the Winter
Cup at Riccarton next month. Greek Meer’s form this season has been sound. He was a fine third in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham on Saturday and has now won three of seven races on the course. What with 24 places as well the stakes Greek Meer has now won total $22 425 for his veteran owner. Mr Jim Young, who also comes from Stratford.
Greek Meer’s purchase price makes his a real bargain. He was purchased by Mr Young and Jack Taylor’s wife cheaply after having first gone through the National Sale ring at Tren tham. By Adios 11, Greek Meer is out of Rose Meer. Smart Fella got out to a long early lead but his eightlength break in the middle stages had gone by the turn. Greek Meer then put a
break on the field. Though Copper Weave chased hard and Athamas and John Wayne kept battling. Greek Meer, in the hands of stable apprentice Dushan Grahonja proved too strong. Greek Meer was Taylor’s fifteenth winner this season. While he can remember a more successful season for a total number of winners, this one with the help of Spring Moss, has been most rewarding financially.
