Method in rugby venue madness
Why. ■ rugby followers may wonder, has a senior game which promises as much as Saturday's clash between New Brighton and University A been set down for the back ground at Lancaster Park. A main ground would certainlyseem more appropriate for these two top teams. There is a reason, and it was given by the competitions chairman. Mr M. R. Inglis, to last night’s meeting. of the C.R.F.L. Christchurch, the C.S.B. Cup leader, will meet Belfast in the main game of the final Cup round on Lancaster Park Oval on Saturday and New Brighton is the only side which can overhaul Christchurch. So whatever the results the winning team will be at the park late on Saturday- afternoon to receive the C.S.B. Cup. "We have had the most unsatisfactory situation in the past of the Cup winner finishing up on an outlying ground and no immediate’ presentation has been possible. "This time there will be no
such difficulty and having the two teams with a winning chance playing at the same time, and in close proximity, should make things even more interesting." said Mr Inglis. He also confirmed that after a request from the selector two more games had been secured for the Canterbury senior B side this season, bringing to six the number of games the team will play. The two additions are against Mid-Canterburv B at Ashburton on August 8 and Nelson Bavs B in Christchurch on the week-end of August 14-15. A Suburbs senior B player. Garry O'Malley, ordered off last Saturday for striking an opponent was suspended for four weeks. The chairman. Mr B. J. Drake, said that while the number of orderings off this year was down on previous seasons "one is always one too many." He suggested that consideration could be given to suspending any further offenders for the rest of the season as a way of showing the union's displeasure.
