New fireplaces out

Existing, operational open fireplaces under proposed metropolitan Christchurch clean air zones can continue to be used in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings. But new fireplaces cannot be installed in existing buildings, new buildings cannot have them, and fireplaces cannot be shifted from one part of a building to another -

Objectors have until August 31 to comment on clean air zones proposed by Waimairi District, Paparua Countv. Heathcote County, Rangiora Borough. Riccarton Borough. Kaiapoi Borough and Eyre County. The Christchurch City Council area is already covered by a clean air zone. Homeowners, cannot be forced to get rid of their

fireplaces under an approved zone, but they cannot install new or additional heating appliances which are not on an approved list. If buildings have been structurally altered to close off fireplaces, those fireplaces cannot be reopened after a clean air zone order is declared. Objections to the proposed zones must be made to the Ministry of Health, .with

copies supplied to the Canterbury United Council. In Waimairi District, the entire district aside from areas zoned Rural G. Rural H and Rural P would be included in the zone. In Paparua County, areas zoned residential, commercial and industrial would be included, but Templeton. West Melton, Tai Tapu, and Prebbleton townships would be outside the zone. Other zones would cover; Heathcote -County— All areas zoned Residential 1. Residential Hillslope. Special Development and Land Management, Commercial Service. Service Station. Industrial 1 and Industrial 2 in the reviewed district scheme. Riccarton BoroughAreas zoned residential, commercial, and industrial.
