Tough week-end for Canty table tennis
It was not a vintage week-end for Canterbury senior table tennis players in the two major tournaments held last week-end. The province's main hope - in the North Island championships in Auckland, the New Zealand titleholder. .lan Morris, was surprisingly eliminated in the semi-final of the women's singles- by Auckland's Shelley Palmer Miss Morris, the top seed, beat a former leading junior. Linda Dyer (Auckland) in straight sets in the quarter finals, but lost to Miss Palmer, 19-21. 21-13, 18-21. 21-23. The event was won by another Aucklander. Mrs Christine Lee. who beat Palmer in the final. 2117. 19-21, 22-20. 21-17. In the other semi-final. Lee beat the promising Bay of Plenty junior. Kadia Rice. Miss .Morris gained some con-
solation for her singles loss bycombining with Auckland's Angela Brackenridge to win the doubles title. The pair, who were the top seeds, beat Lee and Palmer. 21-16. 21-18. 21-15. in the final.
The Canterbury men's champion. Michael Hamel. lost to Auckland’s Peter Jackson, the seventh seed, in the fourth round of the singles. Jackson won. 2114. 21-18. 21-15. Jackson \ was narrowly beaten in the quarter finals by the New Zealand champion. James Morris (Northland). Morris won a marathon encounter. 27-25 in the fifth set. Morris went on to beat a former National champion, Richard Lee (Auckland), in the semifinal. before losing to the wnner. Malcolm Temperley (Auckland). Temperley, aged 21 and the fourth seed, beat the top seed, Barrv Griffiths, in his semi-final.
Hamel and his partner. Hutt Valiev's Simon' Edmonds, were beaten in the quarter-finals of the men's doubles by Griffiths and Jackson. The event was won bv Lee and Morris. In the mixed doubles. Hamel and Miss Morris lost to Jackson and Miss Palmer in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile. Canterbury's topranked player. Maurice' Burrowes. was" a late withdrawal from the Otago championships in Dunedin. The singles titles at the southern tournament, which was staging its fiftieth anniversary, went to the Dunedin players. Simeon Cairns and Yvonne Eyre. Christchurch's Bill Scott won Canterbury's only senior title when he took the veteran singles event. Canterbury's secondranked woman. Pam Shadbolt, was a beaten finalist in the doubles.
