Family planning clinics

Sir,—May I thank Dr Helen McGill, the Senior Medical Officer of the Family Planning Association, for informing me that the F.P.A. has relinquished its street appeal and the F.P.A. doctors now do not receive the $1.25 general medical subsidy. But Dr McGill does not comment:.upon the .fact that the taxpayer subsidises a consultation with an F.P.A-. doctor to the tune of over $ll. whereas it is $1.25 with a general practitioner. At present the F.P.A. doctor charges the patient $6.50 for a consultation, making a total of about $18.50. The Minister of Health has reproached Waikato G.P.s for announcing that thqy intend to charge a total fee of $13.50. If an indigent patient is not charged by the F.P.A.. the association still gets about $l2. With a G.P. it is $1.25. G.P.s have no objection to .the existence of the F.P.A. They would like to work on equal terms. — Yours, etc., SELWYN CARSON. July 5, 1982.
