Mr Sangster may buy racecourse
NZPA Dublin The British pools' millionaire. Mr Robert Sangster, fresh from his unique hattrick of victories in the English, French and Irish Derbys with his colts Assert and Golden Fleece, is still involved in the bid to save the famous Phoenix Park racecourse in Dublin.
A partnership to include Mr Sangster. the leading Irish trainer, Vincent O’Brien, and his son-in-law, Mr John Magnier. could own the course by early next week.
Irish racing and business circles are now confident the course will be saved and reopened, possibly by the end
of this season. Some months ago. Mr Patrick S, Gallagher offered U 2M (SNZ4.76M) for the park, paid a deposit and set up a subsidiary company to carry out improvements at an estimated cost of CIM. Messrs Sangster. O'Brien and Magnier had a 26 per cent interest in the subsidiary, which went into liquidation on the recent collapse of the multi-million dollar Gallagher group. Work on the course is still incomplete and a spokesman for the receivers said: "Discussions are going on about the park, but we do not expect to make a definite announcement until the end of the week at the earliest."
