1983 secondary school zones

The zones of Christchurch secondary schools for 1983 have been decided after a meeting of Education Department and school board representatives. The meeting, convened by the Regional Superintendent of Education. Mr B. K. Gainsford, agreed to retain the existing enrolment zone boundaries, including that for Hagley High School. The only adjustment to the present scheme was a revision of some maximum allowable enrolments because of changing pupil distribution. The scheme has still to receive the approval of the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington). Enrolment boundaries overlap, in- some instances, to create 10 "shared” areas where a choice is allowed between the schools.involved. Each school is required to accept all pupils who apply from within its normal or shared zone.

The proposed scheme sets maximum Form 3 intakes for each school. These have generally been set a little higher than the known number of potential third formers in an area to enable parents to have a degree of choice between schools as well as guaranteed access to their neighbourhood school. Because of their central location, the four single-sex schools have been given a quota which will allow them to draw a reasonable number from most areas of the city.

Right of entry to out-of-zone applicants is not guaranteed. but every effort will be made to meet the preferences of parents and students. In cases of doubt, parents have been asked to

discuss their situation with the principal of the school concerned. Parents must avoid lodging applications for more than one school on behalf of one pupil.

Access to the in-zone school is guaranteed; should an out-of-zone application be declined notice will be received after the notification date of August 16. thus enabling an in-zone application to be made. Schools realise that late applications such as these are unavoidable.

The schools' 1983 prospectuses will be available from July 5 and will contain the official application for enrolment form. All applications whenever possible must be lodged before the closing date of July 30. Parents will be notified of the result of their application after August 16. Although not covered by the enrolment scheme, every person of secondary school age in Christchurch is eligible to attend the Four Avenues Alternative High School, provided the total school roll does not exceed 82 pupils. The enrolment procedure for Four Avenues school is slightly different from that of the other schools. Prospective third formers are required to lodge an application for their normal in-zone high school as well as Four Avenues.

' The school’s prospectus will be issued on July 5 in line with other schools. If the number of applicants, however, exceeds the number of places available, a ballot system will be used, the final outcome of which will not be known until the end of October.
