Royal baby named William

NZPA-Reuter London Britain's new Royal baby has been named William Arthur Philip Louis and will be known as Prince William of Wales, Buckingham Palace announced yesterday. The baby was born a week ago to the Princess of Wales, wife of Prince Charles, the Queen’s eldest son and heir to the Throne. . The infant automatically became second in line to the Throne after his father. The Palace was quick to forestall any link being made with King William 111 — the William of Orange still revered as the hero “King Billy” by Ulster Protestants. “the baby will be known as Prince William, and the name won’t be foreshortened in any way,” said the spokesman. That was the only addition he was prepared to make to the official announcement. This said: "It was announced from Buckingham Palace that the names chosen by the Prince and Princess of Wales for their son are William Arthur Philip Louis.”

It then went on to name the six godparents — the King of Hellenes, Lord Romsey, Sir Laurens Van Der Post, Princess Alexandra, the Duchess of Westminster, and Lady Susan Hussey. The spokesman said he had no information on why the names William and Arthur were chosen by the Prince and Princess, but Arthur is one of Prince Charles's own names. He is Prince Charles Philip Arthur George. Philip is the name of Prince Charles’ father too, and Louis that of his muchloved uncle, the late. Lord Mountbatten, who was killed by an I.R.A. terrorist bomb. Week-end bookmakers’ odds had put William at 7-2, and Arthur 6-1. George, not among the names chosen, had been favourite at evens.
