Rape statistics
Sir—Mr Couch misunderstood what Canon Hone. Kaa was telling us about rape statistics on “Press Conference” ("The Press,” June 12)..1t is utterly false that Canon Kaa wants to “falsify the figures (rape) to hide the truth” as claimed by Mr Couch. Canon Kaa asks the question, “Why are separate statistics kept at all?” Why record a person’s race as part of any conviction statistics? Given the absence of any statistics recording rapists’ nationality, i.e. Australian, Irish, German, etc., the recording of race is clearly an example of entrenched racism. I thought Canon Kaa made this point very clearly. Mr Couch should address himself to the specific question—Yours, etc., GRAEME YARDLEY. June 14, 1982.
