Big crowd at funeral

About 500 friends, relatives. and business associates gathered at Christchurch Cathedral yesterday to pay their last respects to Sir Valdemar Skellerup, who died last Friday.

The Skellerup-Woolston Band, of which Sir Valdemar was the guiding light, accompanied the Cathedral choir and organ at the funeral service. The band played Sullivan's “The Long Day Closes” in the sanctuary of the Cathedral, and also played outside as the coffin was carried from the Cathedral.

A business associate of Sir Valdemar. Mr L. R. Mexted,

gave the eulogy at the service. which was conducted by the Dean of Christchurch, the Very Rev. Maurice Goodall. The Dean Emeritus, the Very Rev. Michael Underhill, said the prayers. Sir Valdemar had retired in April as joint managing director and chairman of Skellerup Industries. Ltd.
