Smelter price ‘agreed’
PA Dunedin South Pacific Aluminium, Ltd, confirmed yesterday that it had reached agreement with the Government on four of the five points in a power price agreement for the proposed Aramoana smelter. The sticking point? remains the actual price of the elec-. tricity. .' / ■ : . / ' ’ / .. Fletcher Challenge’s executive director in Charge of the negotiations, Mr A. B. Downey, said the Cabinet economic committee yester-
day agreed to the previously negotiated “technical aspects” of the arrangement. These included the take or pay, whereby the consortium pays for a given amount of power whether it uses it all or not, delivery of the power, and the timing of the smelter’s construction. The Minister of Energy (Mr Birch) said that unless the consortium was willing to raise the price it had offered for the power, negotiations would end.
