Redwood body seeks support

The Redwood Action Committee seeks support from residents in its fight against a planned refuse transfer station in the area. The committee’s chairman, Mr B. A. LeFevre. said that more than 500 people had so far signed objections to the proposed station. About $2500 had been collected in a door-to-door campaign, which would continue at the weekend, she said. The Waimairi District Council’s two site choices for the Controversial station, on the northern side of Styx Mill Road and to the west of Cavendish Road, have concerned the committee. By not. changing the heavy industrial classification of land*.bounded by Cavendish Road. Sturrocks Road, and

Styx Mill Road, a transfer station could go there as of right, said Mr LeFevre. The committee’s third approach to householders had consolidated support, he said. About $6OOO was required for legal counsel, consultants, and publicity in the fight, which . was four years old. “Residents are not satisfied that the council has given valid reasons, or looked at alternative sites. They are quite unhappy with the council’s attitude, which had been dogmatic and dictatorial,” he said. ? Mr LeFevre said that the residents’ main concern was the traffic it would generate, and environmental effects, such as the attraction of other industries nearby.
