Viswanath rescues India
NZPA-Reuter Northampton Gundappa Viswanath, rested for the one-day international against England on Friday, returned to play a face-saving innings for the Indian cricketers against Northamptonshire on Saturday. Viswanath had scored an unbeaten 86 not out of a total of five for 180 when a storm washed out the final session on the opening day of the three-day game. Viswanath, standing in for Sunil Gavaskar as captain, won the toss and came in at two for 18 after Pakistan test fast bowler, Sarfraz Nawaz, had removed .the openers, Ghulam Parkar and Pranob Roy, for 13 in his first seven overs. Both were l.b.w. while still in single figures. Dilip Vengsarkar and Ashok Malhotra fell to Jim Griffiths after making promising starts. Vengsarkar departed for 15, bowled middle stump as he aimed a stroke on the leg side. When Yashpal Sharma was caught behind playing a loose shot at David Capel, half the side was out for 127. At last Viswanath found a willing ally in Ravi Shastri, and when the rain came the sixth wicket pair had added 53. Viswanath had hit 13 fours in his innings.
