Gas works site
Sir,—Wouldn’t it be nice if the council could see its way to buying the gas works site and turning the area into a small park? That part of the city has always been depressed, aesthetically. We should never let up in our efforts to make Christchurch the most beautiful city in New Zealand. The Railways Corporation could shake itself up, too, and do what Switzerland and Scandinavia do with ugly old shunting yards — spruce them up and plant flowers everywhere. Landscaping and painting and the bulldozing of ugly old sheds, plus a green park and healthgiving trees, would do wonders for this area —Yours, etc., I. M. WITHERS. June 5, 1982.
