Naval activity
Sir,—The New Zealand naval chief, Rear-Admiral K. Sauli, has warned South-East Asian nations to beware of “Soviet naval activity in the region.” How little the military mind changes. One hundred years ago, the same “Taranaki topdressing" was being scattered about. I sometimes wonder how many ordinary Kiwis read, care about, or accept, such statements, and how many of them realise that, this year, our national budget allocated $555 million to so-called “defence” when so many vital and worth-while areas are starved of funds and expert staff. The entire annual cost of the recently axed student holiday work scheme (S26M) is cheerfully wasted by this Government maintaining 'the useless, jingoistic battalion in Singapore. Admiral Sauli's warning is laughable. Russia has just two bases.in the entire Pacific region; America has 28, plus overwhelming dominance in vessels and vassal states. — Yours, etc., . . M. T. MOORE.
