Flares seen
Two Coast Guard vessels and two fishing boats, all from Lyttelton, were called out to find the source of marine flares off Sumner late last evening after the Sumner lifeboat was unable to be launched. The Christchurch police reported that sightings of flares had been made off Sumner about 11 p.m. and again soon after midnight. The Sumner lifeboat was called for assistance but was unable to be launched because the tide was too low.
