Wilson wins S.I. men’s badminton

The pre-tournament favourite. Steve Wilson (Christchurch) won the South Island men’s badminton championship when he beat Peter Whiting, the third seed, in the final at the Skellerup Hall yesterday.

Wilson won. 15-2. 11-15. 158. after dominating his opponent for most of the match-

Whiting, also of Christchurch. remained steady throughout, however, and came back strongly in the second set when Wilson lapsed with some unforced errors.

Wilson, ranked third in New Zealand, raced away to a 7-0 lead in the deciding set. but Whiting remained steady and fought back to 6-7. Whiting had earlier eliminated the second seed and nationally-ranked No. 6, Kevin Ross, of Wanganui, in a marathon 90-minute semifinal. Ross worked Whiting to all corners of the court and kept the rallies alive with expert retrievals.

In the other semi-final, Wilson beat David Ross (Christchurch), in straight sets.

As expected, the New Zealand representative.
