‘Video cassette war’

PA Auckland The first shots in the video war over “pirate” cassettes have been fired after a court application unique in New Zealand legal history. Representatives of A.B.C. Video Enterprises, Inc., and Publishing and Broadcasting. Ltd, video film distributors of New York and Sydney, seized 21 cassette tapes from the offices of the defendant, Video Station, Ltd, Victoria Street, Auckland. A legal representative for the two plaintiffs said the orders were applied for in the High Court in Auckland and executed this week. Entry to Video Station's premises was with the consent of the owner, he said.

The interim injunction also called on Video Station to provide further information within four days. It seeks information on who the defendant has supplied films to and information on who is engaged “in the production, distribution, offer for sale or sale of illicit copy films or films used or intended to be used for making illicit copy films." The defendant is also asked to give documented information relating to “every illicit copy film supplied or offered by or to the defendant.” Applications relating to the interim injunction, came after recent cases in England over pirated video films and cassettes.
