Demolition for cathedral residence
The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament residence and administrative centre in Barbadoes Street above will be vacated this year, and later demolished. The cathedral administra-
; tor, Monsignor James Harrj ington, said that the 22-room t weatherboard building had I become too expensive to I maintain and heat. As the Christchurch Gas Company, was closing it would have
had to be converted to electricity. The four priests living in the presbytery will move to the adjacent Marist Brothers monastery, which will be
adapted to house them and the diocesan chancery. The 103-year.-old building has been the home of four former Catholic bishops, and has accommodated cathedral
parish staff and visiting priests. Before demolition, it may be used to provide temporary classroom space while . the buildings in the adjoining schools are improved before integration.
